ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION (EPD)

WHAT IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION (EPD)

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are standardized documents that provide information on the environmental performance of a product. They offer a way to quantify and communicate the environmental footprint of a product throughout its entire life cycle - from the extraction of raw materials and manufacturing to distribution, use, and disposal.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) can be created by all companies and organizations, regardless of their size or activity, with the aim of improving environmental performance and communicating this performance to the public. It is specifically aimed at organizations that want to demonstrate the environmental performance of their products.

BENEFITS OF IMPLEMENTATION

Some of the benefits of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) include:

        • Market Differentiation: In today's demanding market, both consumers and businesses are looking for environmentally conscious products. EPDs can differentiate your products, clearly and credibly demonstrating your commitment to sustainability and attracting environmentally conscious customers and partners.
        • Market Expansion: As sustainability becomes a global priority, some markets and customers may require EPDs as a prerequisite for the construction of a technical project. By having EPDs in your portfolio, you can open doors to these profitable opportunities.
        • Environmental Risk Reduction: By thoroughly identifying and addressing the environmental impacts of your products, you can proactively prevent potential risks related to regulatory compliance and reputational damage due to unsustainable practices.
        • Operational Efficiency: EPDs provide information on where your products have the most significant environmental footprint. Equipped with this knowledge, you can optimize production processes and supply chains to reduce costs, resource consumption, and environmental impact.
        • Innovation Challenge: EPDs can spark innovation within your organization, encouraging the development of more sustainable materials, processes, and products. This innovation can lead to cost savings and new revenue streams.
        • Brand Enhancement: EPDs can enhance your company's image, strengthening consumer trust and loyalty. It positions your business as a responsible corporate entity and paves the way for sustainable brand development.

THE 6 STAGES FOR DEVELOPING AN EPD

The stages for developing an EPD are as follows:

  1. EPD Strategy Definition: In this stage, the type of EPD needed by the business is determined:
° Single-product EPD: This is the most common type of EPD. It concerns one product from a single manufacturer.
° Multi-product EPD: Includes similar products manufactured by the same manufacturer.
° Industry-wide EPD: Declares the average environmental footprint of a group's products in a clearly defined sector and geographic area.
  2. Product Category Rule (PCR) Selection: Product Category Rules (PCRs) are a set of specific rules and guidelines established for a particular product category or group of products. They define how environmental impacts should be measured, what data should be collected, and how information should be presented for that specific product category.
  3. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): The basis of an EPD is the life cycle assessment (LCA) of a product. This assessment analyzes the life cycle stages of a product, from raw material extraction and manufacturing to distribution, use, and disposal. It quantifies environmental impacts such as energy use, emissions, and resource consumption.
  4. Documentation Report: This provides additional information on the LCA methodology, underlying assumptions, and the overall approach taken.
  5. Third-Party Verification: To ensure the accuracy and reliability of the EPD, it should be verified by a third party (Certification Body).
  6. Publication: Once verified, the EPD is published through a program operator and made available to the public, often through online databases and product labels.
